They are scheduled to come on the air from the island tomorrow, adding to the on-air excitement. And this is near the bottom of the sunspot cycle! And I sometimes hear locals complain there's nothing to work. No phone call from W3UR yet today/tonight, sorry. But, we have plenty from others. We're getting a lot information, particularly from around the U.S., about VU4 signals heard, openings, and propagation to VU4. First, from W1JR, Joe, "Last night VU4AN/VU3KIE had a great signal on 10103 from 00Z (when I got home) until 0110Z when they started to fade down. I called the whole time with my two-element beam and 200 watts and never got through (along with 100s of other USA stations calling at the same time). Once they did stand by for NA and I think they worked a W4 or W5 but that seemed to be about it. They sure worked lots of UA9, JA and Europeans throughout that time period, probably our only good time to work them on 30 meters (which of course I need). I can't understand why they didn't hear me -- as they were 559 the whole time. " [Note: Some U.S. ops may be using considerably more power.] "Unfortunately for me, tonight will be my last chance as I leave for the DX Convention in Visalia and won't be back in time for another chance. Poor scheduling I'd say. Also poor time of the year for VU4. "Signals on 17 meters were great for many hours on end but alas the VU4AN stations seemed to be only interested and listening for Europe, etc. and we couldn't get through! "I would suggest 30 meters today starting at 2200Z onwards until well after their sunrise. I hope they improve their receiving antenna! My last chance is tonight!" Joe was probably one of the first US stations to work VU4AN when "a startled VU4AN/VU2JOS came back `W1JR????' on 14020 at 2012Z April 17th. Jos didn't seem to believe that a USA station could break the European pileup. I assured him I wasn't in Europe! These 3-element SteppIR Yagis (only at 50 feet) really work well!" W5GAI, Skip, suggests Bernie and other ops use odd numbered frequencies to avoid broadcast harmonics and USA ragchewers. For instance, use 10103, 10113, not 10105, 10115. 18133, not 18135. 14033, not 14030. Skip also says, ".we have very few propagation windows to VU4, short path or long path. Click on the Andaman and Andaman-LP tab charts at www.ctdxcc.org/w5gai." AD1C, Jim, also has graphs: http://www.ad1c.us/vu4-levels.pdf and http://www.ad1c.us/vu4-graph.pdf. He says, "I was hearing good signals Tuesday on 20M from 15-16Z. There is another peak late in the day but the opening isn't regular. He notes VU4 and BS7 are his last two countries needed. K7KR worked VU4NRO from Arizona the last time and has the card so he's not overly anxious for this one, but notes that for the other guys on the North American West Coast, the window there may be a little later than what he's been hearing. He worked them on 20M at 1657Z. In looking over his notes, they were just above the noise at 17Z but they were an honest S5 at 1845Z. "Fairly routine, although it was December" (not April). Also, he notes, some of the Arizona DXers worked `em in a window from 00-02Z on both 20M and 40M with signals weak to moderate. "Oddly, sometimes it paid to check the opposite path, as sometimes they were louder the other direction. There didn't seem to be a pattern to that that I could tell.sometimes they would appear to fade out, but when you turned your antenna the other way they were still copyable." He adds, "It'd be nice to have a SteppIR, huh?" (with instant 180 degree direction switching). `KR suggests the VU4 stations check 16-19Z and 00-02Z for the West Coast. W3LPL in Maryland reports, "I and many, many other U.S. stations were hearing Bernie very well last night on 30M from about 2330Z until he QRTed at 01Z. The peak signals occurred around 00Z here on the direct path, about 15 degrees. Unfortunately, he heard only a few US stations, but not me! I can't tell you how many times he CQed in my face without ever picking up so much as a trace of my callsign. Hopefully their reoriented 30M antenna will improve things a lot." [Note: If there is anyone Bernie would stand by for particularly, it's Frank, since they are immediate nextdoor neighbors and Bernie's QTH borrows the W3LPL antenna farm! But.the antenna farm is so effective both Frank and Bernie are used to getting through pileups without too much trouble, without any "special standing by for."] W6FRH, Bob, comments on Bernie's statement that, ".the 20M North America opening is basically 1300-1430Z." Says Bob, "I don't think that holds true for W6-land. From my central California location the 20M VU4AN signals I heard peaked in the 1600-1630Z time period. I had only light and partial copy on the SSB stations that were spotted. However, I had solid copy on VU4AN/VU3RYE on 14002 (worked him on the third call at 1628Z) and another VU4 on 14025." "Don't beam away from North America too early for your left coast pals!" He concludes, "Both 30M and 17M copy was poor today to VU4, compared to 20M," although he doesn't have dedicated antennas for those bands right now. K7ZZ, Tom, noted that there should be a good West Coast path to VU4 on 40M at their sunrise and West Coast sunrise, 1230-1330Z. W1YY/7, Jim, said the VU4 signal on 10103 - probably VU4AN/VU3KIE - was huge all morning West Coast time but `KIE was only working Europe and eventually faded out. He hopes someone will concentrate on North America during the West Coast mornings - which are the evening in VU4. KU0A, Nelson, worked VU4AN/VU3RYC on 20 CW at 1348Z when `RYC was peaking at S7 in Iowa, an "unbelievable signal!" The K was one and the aurora was one. "He held up for about 1-1/2 hours after that but with much reduced signal strength." Nelson started to copy VU4AN/VU3KIE on 30 CW at Iowa sunset when Bernie went QRT. "Hopefully they will hang in a bit longer in coming days. Our sunrise 30M opening is predicted at 11-1330Z but they haven't been there yet (during those times)." [Note: Bernie and Jorma, who have been doing the operating due to other "diplomatic" obligations, had to QRT to give their presentations to the VU group, part of the overall "hamfest" aspect of this whole shebang that was the leverage used to make it all come to pass. That behind them, I think we can expect them to keep operating on 30M past 01Z, although how long a signal will make it through from VU4 on 30M after sunrise there, I don't know.] K0UA adds, "I have not heard VU4 on 17 or up and I'm listening on a TH- 11 at 50 feet. I need VU4 on RTTY and I think our morning 20M opening will have the strongest signal, peaking at 13-14Z. I hope they are there!" THE ABOVE REPORTS ARE ALL FROM "OVERNIGHT" IN THE U.S. THERE ARE SOME NEW QSN REPORTS AS OF DAYTIME IN THE U.S. TODAY, WEDNESDAY, AS FOLLOWS: W5PJR says he heard no signals from VU4 on any band yet Wednesday morning (U.S. time) that were of sufficient strength to be workable. There were fair signals on 20 RTTY but the VU4 was working Japan and a few Europeans. W6FRH says 30M was WIDE open to W6 from VU4 this morning, April 18. VU4AN/VU3JLW and another VU4 later on the same frequency, 10115 were both solid copy when W6FRH tuned in at 1330Z, until 1630Z and still going strong at that time, when Bob sent me an e-mail reporting it. (K6TA, Ken says he heard this one good copy starting at 13Z.) W6FRH did not yet get through. Bob says VU3JLW called for and worked North America for a while but started working JAs as well, and later EUs shortly after 15Z "and that seemed to be the end of any NA stations getting through, with a few rare exceptions." Bob says VU4 was clear and strong when they started listening for NA. There was no fading during the entire three-hour period Bob was listening. He notes that though we may be hearing VU4 well, they may not be hearing us as well, due to QRN on their end and other factors. But Bob wants it known that 30M was open to W6 a lot longer than some of the propagation forecasts that have been going around have predicted. He says, "We're listening and hoping!" K6TA, Ken, notes stations should avoid 10114 because there is a very active county hunters net there at the same time of day. Ken notes there is propagation on 17M from 00-03Z with the best being 01-02Z. VU4AN/VU3RSB was working lots of western U.S. on the 18th during this period but conditions have not been as good since then. He also says 15M long path may be open during this time period. But, Japan is on the path from VU4 to the U.S. and there's no end of Japanese ops chasing VU4. K6TA also landed VU4AN/VU3SID on 14081 RTTY. `SID had a good signal from 17-18Z but it was tough to work him through Europe. K0CA, Cliff, says VU4AN/VU3RYE, Franz, had nice signals into the U.S. Midwest on 20 CW from 13-17Z, a longer window than Bernie realized. Bernie thought 13-1430Z was the 20M opening. KU4J agrees, VU4AN/VU3NZB loud on 17M RTTY from 1630-1730Z but never stood by for North America. `NZB started fading in the U.S. southeast by 1730Z. Also good copy on 20M RTTY -- same story, working Europe. KD5M, Edd, noted that the VU4 opening to the southeastern US, the Gulf Coast area, on17M short path was 01-02Z both evening this week with better copy last night. There were two SSB and one CW station on 17M during that period Tuesday night. They all faded out completely by 02Z. Intra-day update from KU0A: "Today was a complete bust! By the time they got to 30M this morning, I couldn't copy. I don't know if earlier would have been better. I copied VQ9LA two hours before his sunset on 30, 1130-12Z and was wondering where VU4 was. I was an eight-land spot on him, so I suspect he was being heard in eight, nine and zero-land. I heard VU4 on 17 for the first time but they worked JA then EU throughout my opening around 15Z. By the time they thought to ask for NA around 1730Z propagation was gone. The same thing on 20M RTTY. I called almost nonstop for an hour. They were working JA and SE Asia during our opening (longer and strong than on 17), then EU as the band faded into nothingness. A few zeroes got through on RTTY around 15Z, but I know that one of them was running the legal limit into stacked 20M monobanders. Bummer!!!! Seems like they could work JA around the clock, but they sure didn't cut any slack for NA zeroes. The JA wall was virtually impenetrable." W3ZZ, Gene, notes that OH2KI's first name is Jorma, not Jarma. Gene knows because they are both members of the CQWW Advisory Committee and have corresponded quite a bit. END OF THE VU4 REPORT FOR TODAY. F5MZN, Olivier, part of the FY5KE team, inquired on the "towertalk reflector" about tree attenuation caused by jungle trees on frequencies below 30M with horizontal antennas. FY5KE plans to add a new tower at the contest QTH, which might not be in a clear space, especially toward Europe where there is a small but dense forest, a 500-meter-wide strip of jungle, in the near field. The trees are about 15M tall; the tower and antennas will be well above that. He has this link showing the trees: http://www.fy5ke.org/gallery/PICT0255.JPG. Here is the FY5KE home page: http://www.fy5ke.org. K4XS, Bill, responded to F5MZN that, "My QTH in Florida is in a sub- tropical forest environment where most of the trees keep their leaves all year long and they have sap running the year round. My 15M Yagi stack is 33/66/99/132 feet high and is about 50 feet from a sub- tropical forest which is about 80 feet tall. I have never felt it had any effect on the antennas' effectiveness. The forest is located in the direction of Europe through South America." Bill is relocating to Hawaii, when will soon be one of the big signals on the air from KH6, with some serious antenna hardware. Commenter Jim Lux summarized: "If the antenna is well above the forest, the effect is probably minimal. Forest is lossy, but nowhere near as lossy as soil." K5AND, Dick Hanson, and W7XU, Arliss Thompson, are among the best known VHF DXpeditioners. They are headed to VP2V to operate June 22- July 3. From what they've been told, other six meter expeditions from there have not gone well due to very bad QRN from power lines, etc. Accompanied by Nolan, Arliss' son, callsign N0LAN - how about that? Neat! - they will operate from Anegada, a very sparsely populated island to the north of better-known Virgin Gorda. They will be staying at Loblolly Beach Cottages on the north side of the island so it should be prime for the U.S., Europe, and Africa. They'll be taking along "the same old equipment," an Icom 756 ProIII, an FT-897, an amplifier and a 7-element K5AND Yagi. They have yet to finalize the beacon plans, "but most likely it will be on 50106." F5NQL informs us of the IOTA SWL Contest. Discontinued in 2005, it's been picked up by The Mediterranean DX Club, SWL Section in cooperation with the RSGB HFCC. It will be held in parallel with the IOTA Contest from 12Z July 29th until 12Z July 30. "The SWL Geoff Watts Plaque" will honor the founder of the IOTA program. There will be several certificates presented by the MDXC for SWLs. Full rules and software courtesy of SP7DQR are available on http://www.mdxc.org/swl. The International Shortwave League continues their 60th (Diamond) Anniversary celebrations this weekend, April 22 and 23. GB6SWL will be QRV from Walton on the Naze, Essex, England with G6XOU, Herbie, operating. ISWL Club Callsigns GX4BJC/P and MX1SWL/P will also be QRV through April. Correction: In a previous issue of The Daily DX, JH4RHF's name was given as "June." It's "Jun." Microsoft Word did that to me, automatically fixing what it thought was a typographical error that was not an error. ______________________________________________________________________ QSN ______________________________________________________________________ A61M UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - or possibly A61B, or both. 14004 at 1030Z, operator Mohammad, and 7087 at 23Z, with A61B reported on that same frequency before that. The sunspot number for April 18, 2006 was 46, similar to the previous three days, which were down 30 percent from the previous period. ______________________________________________________________________ QSL Info ______________________________________________________________________ Call Manager Call Manager Call Manager ------ ------- ------ ------- ------ ------- 8Q7BO M0BOX J79BXI SM7BXI VU3SIC F5CWU CN8SG EA7FTR LZ80R LZ1BB YK1BA N5FF CO3VK IZ8EBI OA4/DL5SE DL5WM YX0A KU9C EV20R EW8RR TM1OOB F8CKS Z32SM EA7FTR HP1AC EA5KB "The DLs are many and the routes are few." Those are the words of N6PF (ex-W6VFU), Elliott, about his confusion on QSL routes for the many VU4AN/* stations. He says, "So far I have found it entirely confusing." I have assured Elliott that one by one we will get all the correct, detailed, QSL routes, especially for those of us who are patient QSLers and can wait `til W3UR gets back home. He will sort it all out, "after the dust settles." Elliott says, "Maybe it's a test to see whether we really are the deserving." Yes, one of several tests - get a license, build a station, learn how to use the station, be there when the rare DX is on, actually work the rare DX, know how to QSL, patiently wait for the QSL." QSL cards recently received direct and via managers: F5IN, KH2K/AH0, TG9NX, V73CW, ZD8R and ZK1ASQ. Confirmations recently received via LOTW: HB9CVQ. ______________________________________________________________________ Credits ______________________________________________________________________ Many thanks to the following for the above DX information: AD1C, F5MZN, F5NQL, JI6KVR, K0CA, KU0A, K4XS, K5AND, K6TA, K7ZZ, KD5M, N6PF (ex W6VFU), W1JR, W1YY/7, W3LPL, W3UR, W3ZZ, W5GAI, W6FRH and W7XU. ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright (c) 2006 by Bernie McClenny ______________________________________________________________________ W3UR, Bernie McClenny, publishes THE DAILY DX (c) Monday through Friday.
