Reply-To: bernie@dailydx.com To: dailydx@wdn.com ======================== *** The Daily DX (c) *** ======================== Volume 5 Number 154 August 6, 2001 Edited by Bernie McClenny, W3UR Written today by Rich Boyd, KE3Q ______________________________________________________________________ DX News ______________________________________________________________________ EA4DX, Roberto Diaz, will fire up August 15 from Temotu Province, Solomon Islands, H40, which is a separate DXCC entity from H44, the Solomon Islands. Roberto says the callsign for the one-man two-week operation will be issued on arrival. Temotu is IOTA OC-100. Roberto says this will be his typical pattern, SSB only, 18 hours of operating per day. He will have a yagi for 10 through 20 including WARC, a vertical for 40 and 80, and 1 KW. Target frequencies: 3795-3799, 7042-7045, 14195, 18135, 21295, 24945 and 28395. QSL to EA4DX, Roberto Diaz, Doce de Octubre #4, 28009 Madrid SPAIN. On-line after his return to Spain: http://www.qsl.net/ea4dx/. DJ7IK, Andy, who operates at 3V8BB and 5A2A, says from August 2 through September 15 this year all Tunisian (3V) stations will use the special call 3V8MED. This sounds like an unusual idea. The "MED" stands for "Mediterranean Games 2001," which will be held in Tunis, the capital. For more info go to http://www.tunis2001.tn/en/indexen.html. IK8VRH will vacation in Tunisia August 15-30. He plans to operate from the 3V8SQ club station in Monastir. We do not have confirmation that he will be one of those using the 3V8MED callsign. JA6WFM/HR3 is now active from Honduras. JI6KVR reports Hiro got his license a few days ago and has put up a dipole. His rigs are an IC- 747 and an IC-706. QSL to 11311-11, Miyahara, Yatushiro Gun, Kumamoto 869-4602 JAPAN. 7L2ICS/JD1 will be QRV from Ogasawara island (AS-031) September 1-3, 10-80M. QSL via 7L2ICS, Youichi Kamata, 2-3-8, kami-Ikebukuro, Toyoshima-ku 170-0012 JAPAN. LX5A will be active in the WAE CW contest this coming weekend, August 11-12. Bob, LX1RQ, will be on multi-single, apparently with helpers. KD4D, Mark Bailey, is in Curacao, PJ2, getting ready for the WAE CW also. Mark said "I thought I'd go to South America this time." He makes a Caribbean trip every year for this event. Last year it was VP5 (Turks & Caicos Islands) and he went to the WP2Z "Windwood" station (U.S. Virgin Islands) several times before that. When in the U.S., Mark is one of the multi-multi ops at W3LPL and ops with the record-setting W3AO Field Day team in Maryland. PJ7/W6JHB, Jim, will have St. Maarten (NA-105) on the air September 8- 14, 40/30/20/15 and 10, QRP CW. 17M operation is a possibility, if he can get an antenna. OZ6OM brings us reports on Cape Verde, Ghana and N. Marianas. EA7KW says CT1EKF, Xara, has gotten his Cape Verde callsign: D44TD. He likes six meters and his next trip to the islands is for 40 days beginning August 25. He will take his IC-756PRO and four-element 6M yagi. W7XU, Arliss; W0SD, ED and K5AND will operate from Elmina, Ghana October 26-November 4. Elmina is 100 km southwest of the capital, Accra, and is on the Atlantic, an FB beach QTH. The three ops will have two FT-100Ds, a 3CX800 amp and a seven-element yagi on a 25-foot mast. Two frequencies they mention are 28885 and 14345. Internet access is probable, beacon frequencies will be announced later, plane tickets are in hand, and cooperation from the Ghana Amateur Radio Society is secured, they say. KH0/JG3DOC will be on from Saipan September 14-17, HF and 6. QSL to his home call. KA1I/NH2 will be operated by JH7BZR, Ayumi, from Guam (OC-026) August 10-16 including the WAE contest. OZ0J, Jorgen, says XP1AB will be on the air from Sondrestrom on the west coast of Greenland (NA-018) in the CQWW SSB October 27-28. This appears to a multi-multi operation with a group of operators. The unusual call was last used in the 1960s. Jorgen says during the OX2K expedition in May and June of 2000 they built the hamshack and intend for it to be used by visiting hams from all over the world. You can see it at http://www.qsl.net/ox2k. _______________________________________________________________________ SILENT KEYS _______________________________________________________________________ K6DC, Merle Parten, passed away Thursday morning. Merle was on the mixed DXCC list at 332 current, a whopping 383 total. N4LS, Linwood Sikes, also became a silent key. Linwood passed away on Tuesday, July 31, at the age of 92. He was the oldest living FOC member and never missed a Washington, D.C. FOC dinner until this year. ______________________________________________________________________ QSN ______________________________________________________________________ 8R1AK/P GUYANA - Esmond was on 14260 in the 13Z hour, 28445 at 16Z, 28495 then 21295 from 19-20Z, and 14247 from 23- 02Z Sunday night.
