. ===================== *** The Daily DX *** ===================== Volume 1 Number 58 June 6, 1997 Edited by Bernie McClenny, W3UR ----------------------------------------------------------------- Headlines ----------------------------------------------------------------- Wayne King, VE1CBK, has just informed The Daily DX that he will be leaving for Sable Island, CY0, on June 7th. King says "This is a working trip so amateur radio will be for recreation on my off hours." He expects to be on the air starting June 12th or 13th and expects to leave the island on June 23rd. He plans to be on 6 through 80 meters, SSB, CW and RS12. Wayne wants the six meter operators to listen for him on 50.132 MHZ. He says he will be on the normal DX frequencies on HF. The call will be CY0SAB and QSLs go to his home call VE1CBK. Tom, VK0TS, who is on Macquarie Island, will probable join Jim Smith, VK9NS, on 14222 at 03:45Z on Saturday and Sunday. Those who do work Tom may QSL via VK1AUS, P.O. Box 2063, Kambah Valley, ACT 2092, Australia. Jim Smith reports that Mani, VU2JPS, who is located in Port Blair in the Andamans, called him on the phone to tell him that his tour of duty with All India Radio will be coming to an end. Mani and his family will be leaving Port Blair some time this month and will be moving back to mainland India. His new assignment will start in July. Mani has been in Port Blair since August 4th 1994. In December of 1994 Mani received his license from the WPC which authorized his new Andaman address. After he received his license he then set up his very modest station. Jim got involved with Mani in February 1995. Smith called Mani on the phone at his work in Port Blair and was able to confirm that indeed he was on Andaman. A few months later Jim visited Mani and his wife Mala, VU2MTC, in Port Blair. At some point Mani did apply for the VU7 callsign. Smith feels that the VU2 prefix should not be an issue as VU2ANI operated from Port Blair for many years. Jim says "Being so personally involved with Mani for over two years now I know that he has done everything possible to get that VU7 callsign." In mid-1996 Mani visited the mainland and was asked to stop using VU2JPS as his new VU7 ticket was about to be issued. On Christmas eve 1996 Mani received equipment from The Heard Island DX Association. It is not exactly clear as to when Mani got back on the air however recently he has been showing up on 14222 and 14215. The Daily DX asked Jim Smith if it would be possible for him at this late date and time to go to Port Blair and operate. He responded that licenses in India must be renewed every year. His (VU2JBS) was due to be renewed on March 23rd so on January 18th he mailed in his request. Due to some mail problems he just received his renewal Friday, May 30th with it being June 7th it would be just about be impossible to go to Port Blair as Mani will probably be leaving on June 17th. Keep an eye out for Mani, VU2JPS, on Andamans as he may show up on 14215 at 01:30Z on Saturday, June 7th. Jari, OH2BU/OH7RF, reports that OH5AB/MVI and R1MVI started around 13:00Z Thursday from Malyj Vysotskij Island. As of 18:00Z three HF stations were on the air and the 6 meter station should be up by now. ----------------------------------------------------------------- QSN ----------------------------------------------------------------- 8J1RL - Antarctica - Was working JA's on 21022 from 09:00 to 09:30Z.
