. ===================== *** The Daily DX *** ===================== Volume 1 Number 41 May 14, 1997 Edited by Bernie McClenny, W3UR ----------------------------------------------------------------- Headlines ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Oceania DX Group has announced their plans to mount a major DXpedition to Willis Island (VK9W) and Holmes Reef (IOTA OC-2XX New), located at 148 East 16.3 South. Ten operators will leave Cairns, Queensland, Australia on September 9th on the 60 foot "Floreat". The first stop will be the North Islet of Willis. The boat ride should take about 30 hours. They anticipate being active for 12 days with 2 separate locations on the island and 6 complete HF stations. They will also have a station on 6 meters. After the completion from Willis all equipment and operators will be packed up and sent to Holmes Reef to activate a new IOTA. Only some of the equipment will be set up for this portion of the DXpedition before heading back to the mainland. They plan to be active for approximately 30 hours from the reef. Two callsigns will be used for the Willis operation, one for the YL's and one for the OM's. Approval for the callsigns has already taken place and this information will be released at a later time. Box 929, Gympie, 4570 Australia. Don, W5FKX, announced today that Al Hernandez, K3VN (ex WA3YVN), has been named DXer of the Year by the New Orleans International DX Convention. Al is a well-known DXer who has organized, supported and participated in many DXpeditions. He will be honored with a plaque at the 6th Annual New Orleans International DX Convention in New Orleans August 22nd and 23rd. Al will also give a presentation of the VK0IR trip. Martin Cook, N1FOC, who is the ARRL QSL service manager was notified that the 5W Western Samoa QSL Service is being terminated immediately. Phil Williams, 5W1AU, President of the Western Samoa Amateur Radio Club reported that there are only 4 active 5W1 "permanent resident" stations on Western Samoa. Visitors are assigned 5W0 callsigns and most do not leave a forwarding address or QSL Manager address when they leave. Phil has been operating the Bureau from his own pocket since 1971. The ARRL Outgoing QSL Bureau will attempt to forward all 5W QSL cards that are currently at league headquarters. There are approximately 70 YLs who are active from this station. Most of them do not have a license or SWL ticket. They use the radio to practice learning foreign languages. Yuri, UA9MAR, is usually also on frequency with the operator.
