Dili East Timor - 4W6DX

On 30 August 1999, the people of East Timor voted by means of a direct, secret and universal ballot to begin a process leading towards independence.  UNTAET was established to administer the territory and exercise legislative and executive authority during the transition period. UNTAET consults and works in close cooperation with the East Timorese people.

The International Call Sign Series 4WA - 4WZ has been provisionally allocated to the United Nations.  This Information has been brought to the attention of all administrations of ITU Member States in ITU Operational Bulletin No. 711 dated 01 March 2000.  The assignment of Call Signs allocated to the United Nations is under the overall responsibility of the United Nations.  Special arrangements concerning East Timor are under the overall responsibility of the United Nations Transitional Authority for East Timor (UNTAET).  At this stage, no International Call Sign Series has been allocated for general and permanent use by stations in the territory of East Timor.

NEWINGTON, CT, Mar 13, 2000--East Timor--now under United Nations administration--has become the latest DXCC entity, and a station already has been on the air from the former Indonesian territory. The International Telecommunication Union has assigned the prefix block 4WA-4WZ for use by radio stations within the areas administered by the UN Temporary Administration of East Timor--or UNTAET. The prefix assignment is for the use of UNTAET as long as it exists. It will be released to the ITU at the end of its existence.

Dili, East Timor - 4W - DXpedition

The International team from Finland, Portugal and the United States heading for Dili, East Timor is still on schedule to help celebrate the birth of this new DXCC entity.  However, due to business commitments Olli Rissanen, OH0XX, has had to cancel.  Because of the current situation in this new fledgling country a limited team has been put together. Bernie McClenny, 4W/W3UR, and Jose de Sa, CT1EEB/4W6EB, are still on schedule for late this week and early next week arrivals.  Operations should start sometime on March 26th.

Doug Brandon, N6RT, has volunteered to release daily bulletins with information from the last 24 hours and plans for the next 24 hours.  These bulletins will be sent to the three DX reflectors and subscribers of The Daily DX.  Please do not send e-mails to Doug, as he is only able to relay our messages.  The 4W team has a web page at http://www.dailydx.com/4W6DX.html.  Plans are to post logs there once a day.

Due to flight limitations only a small amount of equipment can be brought in with the team.  Equipment will include three transceivers, one small amplifier for 10-80 meters, a Force12 C3S tribander, which can be used on 10, 12, 15, 17, and 20 meters, wire verticals and dipoles for the low bands.  There probably will not be any 160 meter operation.

The group has been invited to stay in the home of Thor Stefansson, 4W6MM, in the capital city of Dili.  There is a possibility the team will have to relocate in Baucau about 3-4 hours East of the capital.

Pertti, OH2RF/4W6RF, is still expected to join the team after the TX0DXpedtion.  He will be able to bring in more equipment.  Ross, 4W6UN; Thor, 4W6MM; and Antonio, CT1EGH may also join in if their time allows.

The 4W group has been working closely with the TX0DX team in the Chesterfield Islands with operating frequencies to help minimize interference and confusion.

Planned (updated) operating frequencies are:

CW 1826.5, 3502, 7002, 10107, 14007, 18070, 21007, 24907, 28007

4W/W3UR QSL via OH2BN, Jarmo J. Jaakola, Kiilletie 5-C-30, 00710 Helsinki, FINLAND.
